Cost: $250 x 2. This pathway is set to read the Gospel of Matthew over 24 weeks. To join this pathway, subscribe to the slow reading program for Q1 and then subsequently for Q2. Subscription grants access to all slow reading groups, plus liberal arts consultations.
Description of Pathway:
We invite you to join us in a fresh, new reading of the Gospel according to Matthew.
Let us suspend what we know, or think we know, and see what is there on the page as if we were reading it for the first time.
Why a possibly Quixotic reading? At Symposium we think it best to go straight to the sources and see for ourselves, rather than rely on the voluminous expert interpretations, which “sediment” the primary source.
The word translated into English as “gospel” means “good news.” Are the books old, or are we the readers old and tired out? To help us see the book anew, we will read a lesser-known, less-trodden translation, the Ronald Knox translation, available here.
We will puzzle out the story with fresh eyes together for two quarters (28 weeks, a chapter per week). If there is sufficient interest we may continue onto the Gospel according to Mark. Online sessions are on Thursdays at 8:00 PM ET, for 1 hour and 15 minutes, beginning January 9th, 2025. Co-led by Reynaldo Miranda and Jason Happel.

Other suggested translations include (we recommend that you choose a translation that is unfamiliar to you):
The Richmond Lattimore translation
The Authorized Version of 1611 (the King James Version)
The Rheims New Testament of 1582 ((unrevised by Challoner)
Or a serious and excellent translation you’ve been wanting to read for the first time.
We only ask that you avoid translations that take too many creative liberties, like the Jefferson Bible, or the Boomer Bible’s, Book of Willie (https://theboomerbible.com/tbbtoc.html)
